Queen’s celebrates Northern Ireland Apprenticeship Week 2026
Queen’s University Belfast is proud to take part once again in Northern Ireland Apprenticeship Week from 2-6 February 2026.
Led by the Department for the Economy, the week-long programme of events aims to showcase the benefits and vital contributions apprentices make across diverse sectors.
Queen’s Technician Apprentices provide integral technical expertise that drives world-class research and supports high-quality teaching, shaping the next generation of leaders.
Working collaboratively with Belfast Metropolitan College and more recently, Southern Regional College, the University offers structured programmes spanning a wide range of disciplines within the Faculties of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences and Engineering and Physical Sciences, combining hands-on workplace experience with formal learning. These initiatives not only promote technical excellence and long-term career growth but also help address critical skills gaps across the University and the wider Northern Ireland workforce.
With approximately 250 technicians, 5.4% of the University’s staff, across three Faculties and two Directorates, their contributions are essential to Queen’s success and societal impact.
Gillian Riddell, Technician Commitment Manager at Queen’s, said:
“Technician Apprentices play a vital role in delivering excellence in teaching, research and innovation at Queen’s. Through their skills, commitment and expertise, and our strong partnerships with Belfast Metropolitan College and Southern Regional College, our technician apprentices help drive our strategic ambitions, strengthen local and international collaboration, and contribute meaningfully to the wider community and society.”
Bringing these programmes to life is Sarah Lowe, a member of Queen’s first cohort of Higher-Level Apprentices.
Sarah is currently completing the Applied Science – Bioscience Pathway Level 5 Foundation Degree Higher Level Apprenticeship, a programme delivered in partnership with Southern Regional College. Based at the Future Medicines Institute (FMI), Sarah spends one day per week at Southern Regional College while gaining valuable hands-on experience at the University four days per week, benefiting from the seamless integration of academic learning and workplace experience.
Reflecting on her apprenticeship journey, Sarah said:
“This apprenticeship has offered me the ideal balance between structured learning and real-world application, allowing me to build confidence in a professional setting while continuing my education."
Queen’s Technician Apprenticeship Programme offers individuals a unique opportunity to join a dynamic community, receive expert mentorship and guidance, and earn a competitive salary. For Queen’s, apprenticeships provide fresh talent, drive innovation, and help build a skilled, diverse, and inclusive workforce.
