BLOG: A New Chapter for Student Support at Queen’s: Welcome to Accessible Learning Support

“These updates are more than just procedural tweaks – they’re a bold step towards ensuring that all students at Queen’s feel empowered to seek the support they deserve.”

We are excited to unveil a transformative change that marks a new chapter in student support: Disability Services has officially rebranded as "Accessible Learning Support." This fresh identity isn't just a new name – it's a renewed commitment to reach out to more students than ever before, especially those who may have felt hesitant to seek help in the past.

The journey to this change began with listening to student voices. We learned that some students were reluctant to engage with the previous Disability Services, because they did not identify with or associate themselves with the term "disability." To address this, we embarked on a research and consultation process. We engaged with a wide range of stakeholders, including the Centre for Educational Development, the Students’ Union, Staff Wellbeing, the Disability Forum, and even prospective students at our DS Offer Holder event. "Accessible Learning Support" was the name that resonated most, reflecting our commitment to inclusivity and the exceptional services we provide.

But the changes don’t stop at the name. We understand the challenges students face in obtaining diagnoses – long waiting lists and delays can be significant hurdles. We’re committed to making support more accessible, particularly for students facing challenges in obtaining medical documentation or awaiting a diagnosis. One of the most significant updates is that students who are struggling to provide medical evidence are no longer required to submit it when first completing their questionnaire. While we still encourage submitting documentation to help tailor the best possible support, we’re removing unnecessary barriers to ensure that every student who needs help can get it.

These updates are more than just procedural tweaks – they’re a bold step towards ensuring that all students at Queen’s feel empowered to seek the support they deserve. Accessible Learning Support is here to provide a welcoming, stigma-free environment where every student can thrive. With these changes, we’re not just opening doors; we’re holding them wide open for all.
