On 30 April 2025, Mitchell Institute Deputy Director, Professor Louise Mallinder, took part in an online seminar hosted by the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights (UICHR).  The webinar explored ‘Law, Policy and Practice in Sustaining Peace’ and examined requirements and best practices for sustained peacebuilding.

The other speakers were Mohammad Musa Mamodi of Yale Law School and former Executive Director of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission and Dr Tonny Raymond Kirabira of the University of East London.  The event was moderated by Professor Amy Weismann, of the UICHR and was the third in a three-part series entitled ‘From Conflict to Lasting Peace: The Role of Human Rights’.

In her remarks, Professor Mallinder explored the concept of sustainable peace before sharing some lessons and challenges from Northern Ireland’s experience of sustainable peace since the 1998 Agreement.

Professor Mallinder is the Deputy Director and Theme Lead for Legacy at the Mitchell Institute.  Louise is also Professor of Law at the School of Law at Queen’s University Belfast. Her research interests relate to the fields of international human rights law, international criminal law, and law and politics in political transitions.
