We welcomed Visiting Student Stefano Filippini to the Institute in February.

Stefano is currently a PhD student at Scuola Normale Superiore, Florence.  For his PhD research, Stefano is researching the movements-memory nexus in post-violent societies, specifically in the Basque Country and Northern Ireland.  He aims to analyse how a former radical community interprets the violent past in the present.  He takes a generational approach by studying how memory differentiates among political generations and the role of remembering the armed group in constructing a movement's collective identity.

Throughout his period in Belfast, he will be conducting interviews with activists of different ages from the Nationalist community to explore the connections between memory and collective identity by looking at three dimensions: emotional proximity, social boundaries and narratives of the past, and shared conditions of the present.

During his tenure, Stefano will be supervised by Institute Fellow: Legacy, Professor John Nagle.
