Overview
The PDC Reps's Committee is delighted to announce the return of the Queen's Postdoc Showcase in celebration of National Postdoc Appreciation Week 2022 which runs from 19 - 23 September. The theme of this year's event is 'Resilience and Innovation'.
This is an event organised 'by postdocs, for postdocs', and an opportunity for all research staff at Queen's to showcase their research, learn about others' research, and network.
The programme will involve keynote talks by invited speakers around the theme of 'resilience and innovation', a research poster exhibition, 10-minute presentations and 5-minute flash-talks by selected postdocs, and a range of networking opportunities (including over drinks at the end!).
There will be prizes for the best talks and posters and all selected speakers will be offered to get their professional portrait picture taken by a photographer, which they can use for various profiles.
The PDC Postdoc Awards' winners will also be announced at the end of the day.
The research talks will align with the University's five research themes, and will be pitched to a wide audience, in order to enable researchers across the different disciplines to understand and enjoy them.
How to take part:
Attend the showcase
*Registration is now closed
To attend, please register via this booking link (also available through the button on this page). Everyone is welcome to attend this event however, only postdocs are eligible to submit abstracts for presentations/posters.
Submit your profile
*Profile submission is now closed
Profiles of Queen's research staff will be displayed on the screen of the poster room during the event, as well as shared on the PDC website and on Twitter via the PDC account during National Postdoc Appreciation Week.
The information collected include your name, a short sentence defining the overall aim or impact of your research, one or two hobbies, your country of origin, the country you did your PhD in and a picture.
You can submit your profile directly in the registration form for the showcase (see section above).
Submit an abstract to present a poster or give a talk
*Abstract submissions for oral and poster presentations are now closed
About abstracts
The audience at the showcase will be research staff from all the different schools at Queen's. You thus need to pitch your research like you would to any educated member of the general public, avoiding jargon, and focusing on the essence of your research, what is novel/innovative about it, and how it can change/impact your field and the world. For example, someone researching literature should be able to understand and enjoy the presentation from a researcher in chemistry and vice-versa.
Abstracts will be expected to meet this level of accessibility.
Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words and should ALL be submitted online using the abstract submission form.
Application deadline: Wednesday 20 July 2022 at 23:59
Posters
Posters will be displayed all day, with an interactive session over lunchtime.
Presenting a poster requires submitting an abstract (see section above).
We intend to accept all posters submitted. If we receive more submissions than the room can accommodate, which is unlikely, we will select posters in order to match as well as possible the diversity of research themes of posters to the one of registered participants (based on submission date in each theme).
Attendees can submit posters they have already used for other conferences. We understand that such posters may be pitched at specialists, but your abstract shouldn't, and we will display abstracts alongside posters for better accessibility.
Poster dimensions: Poster boards are size 4ft x 4ft and posters can be any size up to A0 maximum.
Presentations
Presentations will be expected to be accessible as highlighted above (think about presentations such as TEDtalks and 3-minute thesis presentations). There will be two types of presentations during the showcase, 10-minute talks and 5-minute flash-talks. You can indicate your preference when submitting your abstract, or tick both formats.
A panel will review presentation abstracts and select the maximum number to fit the allocated time slots, ensuring that a diverse range of research themes is covered (probably 6 x 10 min talks and 9 x 5 min flash-talks). Presenters will be selected based on the quality of their abstract, especially its accessibility to the wide audience.
Presenting a talk requires submitting an abstract (see section above).
