New Academic Publications from the Children's Learning and Inclusive Places project
The Children’s Learning and Inclusive Places (CLIP) project was a joint initiative with the University of Glasgow completed by QCAP during 2022. This participatory action research project, involving the active engagement of children from the Market
The first publication, "A Causeway to Impact," was developed jointly with QCAP researchers and their counterparts at the University of Glasgow, Network for Social and Educational Equity. This paper introduces a new model for consultation in communities, one that is integrated, intergenerational, and community-based. Inspired by the imagery of the Giant’s Causeway and the academic bridge we sought to build between Scotland and Northern Ireland. This framework reflects the ethos of QCAP and the CLIP project, where the voices of children are not just heard but actively contribute to shaping the future of their community.
By fostering collaboration between researchers and community members, across generations, this model seeks to enhance the impact of community-based participatory action research. It is a causeway, a bridge connecting the rich insights of the community with actionable strategies for positive change.

The second publication, a findings paper entitled "'We Live Here and Play Here, We Should Have a Say'," delves into the thoughts and perceptions of the young participants from the Market community. The title itself echoes the sentiments of the children, emphasizing their desire to actively contribute to the shaping of the spaces they inhabit.
As part of the project, the children involved became co-researchers, and gathered evidence in the form of photographs of significant places in their community. All pictures included here were taken by the participants of the CLIP project.
From play areas to communal spaces, the children shared their insights, aspirations, and concerns. It is apparent that the Market is not merely a physical location but a living, breathing entity shaped by the daily experiences and dreams of its residents, including the youngest.
Empowering Voices, Shaping Futures
The CLIP project, rooted in the principles of participatory action research, goes beyond traditional academic endeavours. Providing an example of the possibilities that can result from community engagement and showcasing the transformative power of including all voices in the conversation. The publications emerging from this project represent not just academic achievements but a collective effort to empower the next generation. Directly linked to the evidence from the CLIP project is the establishment of a youth forum, with the support of QCAP the MDA and the local youth club which it is hoped will ensure that children’s voices are heard and actioned for generations to come.
