Community and Voluntary Partners

Working Together to Strengthen Services Across Communities

SUMIT is working in partnership with community and voluntary organisations across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland to enhance and future-proof services

The SUMIT Project is working in partnership with community and voluntary organisations across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland to enhance and future-proof services for people experiencing substance use and mental health challenges. Through collaboration, shared learning and innovation, we are supporting organisations to strengthen what they already do well — while developing new, digitally enabled approaches that respond to the realities of people’s lives.

Together, we will co-design at least three digital enhancements within existing services. These enhancements will be person-centred, trauma-informed, and grounded in real service-user experiences, ensuring that digital tools support — rather than replace — human connection and compassionate care.

At the heart of this work is the SUMIT Community of Practice:

“The SUMIT Community of Practice is a safe, collaborative space where people across our organisations connect to share learning and experiences, amplify service-user voices and; through honest, trusting and equal partnership; explore practical digital opportunities that support growth, reflect real-life needs and improve outcomes for people affected by substance use and mental health issues.”

We are proud to partner with organisations who share our commitment to innovation, equity and meaningful impact. Their collaboration with SUMIT reflects a collective ambition to deliver high-quality, person-centred care and to create lasting change within the communities they serve.

Aligned with national drug and mental health strategies, we aim for these organisations — through their engagement with SUMIT — to become recognised leaders in advancing digital solutions that support recovery, wellbeing and long-term resilience.

North West Methodist Mission

North West Methodist Mission (NWMM) is a long-established, community-based charity in Derry/Londonderry supporting people experiencing homelessness, addiction, poverty and social isolation. Rooted in compassion and inclusion, NWMM delivers a wide range of frontline services including drop-in support, housing and resettlement assistance, counselling, and programmes designed to promote wellbeing, connection and community participation.

At the heart of NWMM’s work is its supported accommodation provision for men at Crawford Square and for women at Clarendon Shelter and Ashmore House. These services provide safe, structured and supportive environments for individuals in crisis, helping them stabilise their circumstances and take meaningful steps towards independence and improved quality of life. The Mission works closely with local health and social care partners to ensure a welcoming, non-judgemental and person-centred approach that meets people where they are.

As a SUMIT demonstrator site the NWMM plays a key role — showcasing best practice within Communities of Practice and actively contributing to the co-design and delivery of digital solutions that enhance access to support services. By embedding innovation within real-world service settings, NWMM helps ensure that digital developments are trauma-informed, practical and grounded in lived experience.

This collaboration provides valuable, frontline insights into the service-user journey — from crisis presentation to recovery and resettlement — ensuring that digital tools reflect the realities faced by individuals engaging with homelessness, addiction and mental health services. In doing so, NWMM acts as a vital bridge between SUMIT and people accessing recovery supports, helping to shape digital approaches that are accessible, responsive and capable of delivering meaningful, lasting impact across communities.

Depaul

As part of a cross-border charity, Depaul North West supports people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness across the North-West of Ireland. Operating in Northern Ireland since 2005, Depaul has supported thousands of individuals and families each year through a wide range of accommodation and outreach programmes. Their services focus on vulnerable adults and families, providing not only safe and secure accommodation, but also healthcare support, harm reduction services and practical pathways towards stability and recovery.

Depaul North West delivers a comprehensive network of local services including emergency and temporary accommodation, floating and housing support, outreach and day services, and specialist health and harm reduction initiatives. Much of this work is embedded within a peer support framework, recognising the value of lived experience in building trust, promoting engagement and supporting long-term recovery.

At the heart of Depaul North West is Foyle Haven, a drop-in centre originally founded in 2001 through an unlikely but powerful alliance between a police officer and a Catholic nun, united by a shared commitment to addressing street drinking and supporting marginalised individuals. Since being taken over by Depaul in 2011, Foyle Haven has evolved into a central hub for outreach, drop-in support and harm reduction services, offering a welcoming and person-centred space for those most in need.

As a community demonstrator site, Depaul North West plays an important role showcasing best practice within Communities of Practice and contributing directly to the co-design and provision of digital solutions that enhance access to support services. This collaboration enables practical, real-world insights into the service-user experience, ensuring that digital innovations are grounded in lived realities and responsive to the complex needs of people engaging with recovery services. In doing so, Depaul North West helps to strengthen the bridge between SUMIT and frontline recovery services — supporting the development of accessible, trauma-informed and person-centred digital approaches that improve outcomes for individuals and communities alike.

For over 30 years, the organisation has supported young people, adults, individuals in contact with the criminal justice system, and families across 16 locations throughout Northern Ireland.

Guided by its mission, “Change Starts Here,” and its vision, “Every Person Stronger,” Start360 places individuals at the centre of its work, empowering positive change and promoting long-term wellbeing.

Start360 supports people through an extensive array of skill-based programmes and services, including drug and alcohol services, mental health support, employability initiatives, and support for individuals leaving prison. Services are provided through tailored interventions such as one-to-one support, group work, residential programmes, and family interventions, ensuring a holistic and person-centred approach.

As a SUMIT Associate Partner, Start360 will provide local coordination across the three prison services in Northern Ireland.  Drawing on its extensive understanding of local need, and its established commitment to supporting individuals transitioning from custody to community, Start360 will play a pivotal role in fostering collaborative networks and strengthening partnerships with community stakeholders to support effective, place-based project implementation.
